Retainers

Retainers are typically used in the final step of orthodontic treatment to keep the teeth in their corrected positions. Orthodontic retainers are vital to protecting your smile and ensuring the results achieved by braces or Invisalign can be maintained in the long term.

The Orthodontic Place provides an outstanding level of service and care to support patients through every stage of orthodontic treatment, helping you walk away with the smile of your dreams.

Retainer treatments vary depending on your situation. Our orthodontist will decide which retainer type is the most suitable for you. Get in touch with the team today to find out more.

Aftercare Following Orthodontic Treatment

Aftercare is a very important part of orthodontic treatment. Without it, teeth will most likely shift back to their original position, undoing all the hard work that’s gone into correcting the smile – a situation no patient or orthodontist wants to see!

That’s why we make aftercare a priority at The Orthodontic Place. Following the removal of your orthodontic appliance, our lead orthodontist, Dr Sara Dudley, will assess your teeth and fit you for a retainer.

Removable Retainer vs. Fixed Retainer

Different types of retainers are divided into two categories: removable retainers and fixed retainers. Removable retainers include clear retainers, plastic plates or plates with wire, which can be taken out for cleaning and eating.

A fixed retainer (or permanent retainer) is a single piece of wire glued behind the front teeth, which remains in the mouth long term. Our orthodontist will decide which retainer is best for you to maintain the straightness of your teeth going forward.

To ensure optimal results, all patients are encouraged to wear their retainers as directed and attend regular retainer check-in appointments in the months and years following treatment.

Retainers after Braces

All patients are required to wear a retainer after braces treatment.

When braces are first removed, the gums are still adjusting to the new placement of the teeth, so wearing a removable retainer full-time or part-time  is recommended. Once the gums have settled down after a few months, you may only have to wear a removable retainer at night or for a few hours each day.

A fixed retainer can also be used in conjunction with a removable retainer, depending on your situation. If you had gaps between your teeth before braces or overcrowding that required a tooth extraction, you’d most likely need a permanent retainer.

Our warm, experienced staff will guide you through the process of retainer treatments, answering any questions or concerns you may have.

Retainers after Invisalign

Invisalign moves your teeth differently than traditional metal braces, yet the aftercare is much the same. Most patients are required to wear removable retainers, which look and feel similar to clear aligners, in the months following treatment. Permanent retainers may also be necessary to apply at the end of treatment.

Orthodontic Retainers for Kids and Adults

Orthodontic retainers are required after orthodontic treatment, no matter your age. However, age can determine how long you wear your retainer and what type of retainer you need.

For example, adult teeth are harder to shift than kids and face greater risks of relapse following the removal of braces. So, it is recommended that adult patients get permanent retainers and/or wear removable retainers for longer periods of time than children and teens.

Orthodontic Retainers Cost

On average, the cost of a orthodontic retainer in Australia is between $200-$500. This price is usually included in the orthodontics plan provided by your orthodontist.

The cost of a replacement retainer won’t be covered in your plan, so you will need to pay an additional fee if you lose, misplace or damage your orthodontic retainer.
